Literature Text

Unconsciousness

I will do everything I can for you,
like comb down the games played in your hair while we slept.
I will transcribe the dreams you didn't know you had. Jessica,
I was with you while you were riding a satellite, biking thru the shuffled stars.
Fluids are piped into you.
Blood hardens around the needles.
Your skin is colorless, I lie next to you and
pretend that we are in an igloo on a sunny day. I tilt you to one side and
wash your sores.  Shoulder wilts over shoulder.
The line of croquet balls in your spine crack and crow. Rib on poplin rib.
The most human thing I can do is look at you.
I miss you and believe that the moment you wake,
the emotions your brain won't let you feel will rush to you.
You'll have a pouch which holds a knowledge that you cannot verbalize.
You'll believe that when I fall asleep I will understand
but until then, you will do everything you can for me.

was this written from experience? It's very heartfelt...and that comes from specific inclusions, like the name of the girl, and details like "washing your sores."

I think my favorite bit of imagery may be the one shoulder slumping over the other.

The broken nature of the poem and the subject match very well...and if it's from experience, then I know your pain and am very sorry.
